Description : The National Physical Laboratory requirement is for a set of up to 8 (eight) bi-directional, dual channel erbium-doped fibre amplifiers (EDFAs) to support the long-distance dissemination of optical frequency standards. Bi-directional means that light can propagate in either direction through the erbium-doped fibre, the optical path being exactly the same. Dual channel means that each unit contains two independent EDFAs with a common control and monitoring interface.The signals to be amplified are expected to be at and around 1572 nm (ITU 100 GHz DWDM channel 07), however future use may extend across a larger wavelength band.Reliability is a key requirement for these bi-directional EDFAs to ensure uninterrupted operation over months when deployed in the field. The bi-directional EDFAs will be integrated into an IT-based management system. This implies the need for remote control and monitoring using standards-based communication interfaces and protocols.
