The West of England Combined Authority-s Business Innovation Fund awards grants and support to Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs) to undertake experimental development Research and Development (R&D) activities to contribute towards the creation of new products, processes or services. SMEs progress through a two-stage application process for the Business Innovation Fund: i) Expression of Interest, on which basic eligibility checks are conducted by the West of England Combined Authority; and ii) Full Application, which are competitively assessed. Full Applications are assessed on their individual merits and against criteria summarised in the Business Innovation Fund grant guidance, updated for each round. Scores from these assessments are combined and used to recommend applications for grant award decisions, on which the Combined Authority is the final arbiter. Examples of the types of R&D activity that could be eligible for support and are progressing in other regions running similar support programmes, are as follows: development of augmented reality surgical training via home simulator and online portal; trialling of zero carbon heaters for homes and commercial spaces; testing of surface coating that kill microbes and viruses at high speed.
