  • Tenders are invited for Holomondas Observatory Upgrades for Optical and Quantum Communication (artes 4.0 SPL Optical Communication - Scylight 6 C.013 / Sl.049) - Expro+. Objective: To develop transmit and receive systems for optical communication and the reception of quantum keys. Targeted Improvements: Tenfold speed increase in data rates by optical communication between satellites and ground and implementation of a cyber-secure quantum channel. Description: The Holomondas telescope has been identified to support the ESA programs ScyLight, HydRON as well as the SAGA Project for the preparation of the space segment of the EC Euro QCI Initiative. The telescope will be equipped with pointing, acquisition and tracking (PAT) equipment to enable optical and quantum communication links with orbiting satellites.The following sub-systems will be implemented:- Man-machine interface and telescope tracking software for spacecraft in LEO and beyond.- Focal plane instrumentation, capable of detecting and high-speed centring of satellites visible by illumination from sunlight, or by their laser beams. Data reception according to the optical on-off keying (O3K) standard (in the optical C- and L-bands as implemented in CCSDS) and cyber-secure key reception via a separate quantum channel.- Uplink beacon and data transmission according to the optical on-off keying (O3K) standard (at 1590 nmwavelength as implemented in CCSDS) and quantum key sifting via public optical channel.- Transmitter and receiver alignment system.Greek industrial and academic players are expected to form a consortium to implement the activity within a short timeframe.In addition the possibility to augment the data reception capabilities of both telescope installation with an adaptive optics system compensating the distortion of the signals caused by the atmosphere will be studied.
