Description : As outlined in the August 2020 Environment Bill Targets Policy paper the Government is considering targets that improve the overall status of species populations on land and in freshwaters. In particular, targets for species abundance and species extinction risk are being explored. Moreover, in June 2021 the Government committed to setting a short-term target for species abundance for 2030. To ensure that potential Environment Bill species abundance and extinction risk focussed targets and the policies that help us meet them are adequate and provide value for money, it is essential that we have robust evidence to inform our approach. This project will explore and improve the evidence base around the benefits of policy interventions targeting the improvement of mean species abundance and avoiding species extinction in England through a primary valuation study. This will help ensure species related interventions are evidence based, in line with Green Book guidance. It will also help us to ensure species interventions are better considered in economic appraisals more broadly.
